How will genome research affect our assessment of hybrids - a look into the future

There has been much discussion about hybrids among Swedish birdwatchers in recent years, and knowledge is constantly advancing. Martin Irestedt, docent and researcher at the Swedish National Museum of Natural History, explains the latest findings regarding hybridization in bird fauna, as well as how this newly acquired knowledge leads to difficulties in classifying individuals as either pure or hybrids.

Björn Malmhagen talks about how the Swedish Rarities Committee currently works with decisions regarding publication and which policies and guidelines are the basis for the committee's decisions. In conclusion, the lecturers look into the future and discuss how newly acquired knowledge can both change current taxonomy and how we view hybrids and publishing.

Other information

Martin is a researcher at Sweden's Natural History Museum where he leads a research group studying relationships, speciation processes and hybridization in birds. The group study species complexes that occur in tropical regions such as New Guinea. Bird genomes have therefore often been obtained from birds that are more than 100 years old which are preserved in natural history collections.

Björn Malmhagen is chairman of the Swedish Rarities Committee.
